For young athletes, pain is often seen as part of the game. But when knee or heel pain becomes persistent, it’s more than just soreness—it’s a sign of something deeper. **Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease and Sever’s Disease** are two of the most common conditions affecting young athletes, often causing discomfort that can sideline them from their sport. The good news? There’s a solution.
What is Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease?
Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease is a painful knee condition that primarily affects growing adolescents, especially those involved in sports that require running, jumping, and sudden changes in direction. It occurs when the **patellar tendon pulls on the growth plate at the top of the shinbone (tibia)**, causing irritation, swelling, and pain.
Common Symptoms:
✅ Pain and tenderness below the kneecap
✅ Swelling in the front of the knee
✅ Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
✅ A bony lump at the top of the shinbone
What is Sever’s Disease?
Sever’s Disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, affects the growth plate in the heel. It’s most common in young athletes who do a lot of running and jumping, as the repetitive stress on the Achilles tendon pulls on the still-developing heel bone.
Common Symptoms:
✅ Pain and swelling in the back of the heel
✅ Tenderness when squeezing the sides of the heel
✅ Discomfort that worsens with physical activity
✅ Stiffness or limping after intense exercise
Why Are These Conditions So Painful?
Both Osgood-Schlatter’s and Sever’s Disease are linked to growth spurts, making them particularly common in kids aged 8-15. During this stage, bones grow faster than muscles and tendons, leading to increased tension and irritation in key areas. The repeated stress from sports only worsens inflammation, making movement painful and limiting performance.
